2006 Team Sarcoma
 |
The Team Sarcoma 2006 Initiative
Scores of people worked to make the Team Sarcoma 2006 Initiative a truly
international event focused on raising public awareness of sarcoma and
raising funds for sarcoma research.
We
have now read all of the reports that the organizers of 25 local Team
Sarcomas have sent us and can report that there were more than 770 people
involved in a wide variety of events at different locations worldwide. Over
770 people! This is indeed well beyond our expectations. Four of the teams
had TV coverage, one had radio coverage, and several newspaper articles were
written about some of the individuals involved in the events. We expect more
post-event stories to be appear. Furthermore, although all of the pledges
are not in yet, it looks like the Team Sarcoma 2006 Initiative will raise
about $120,000.
We
have made a slide show of the teams and their accomplishments. We encourage
you to download it, view it, and pass it on to those you feel might enjoy
seeing it.

Team Sarcoma
Sarcoma is a rare and
dangerous cancer. Between 15-20% of all children’s cancers are
sarcomas and about 1% of adult cancers are sarcomas. Team
Sarcoma 2006 is an internationally coordinated event designed to
raise public awareness about this disease and the impact it can
have on families, raise public awareness of the lack of young
adults in cancer-related clinical trials, and raise money for
sarcoma research. Cyclists from all over the world will be
biking on the same days that we are biking in Denmark. These
”Virtual” Team Sarcomas will aid us in achieving our goals. Team
Sarcoma 2006 is project of the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative.

Tell your family and
friends what you're doing and why. By discussing sarcoma with them,
you are helping increase public awareness about sarcoma and the lack
of young adults in clinical trials. You can learn about sarcoma by
downloading our “Sarcoma Facts” information sheet. The facts sheet
is available in a variety of languages on the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma
Initiative website (click
here). More detailed information can be found on
the
sarcoma page on the
Initiative's website. Print out and give a copy of some of this
material to family and friends or e-mail them copies of these
pages. Some other useful sites are found on the Initiative's
Sarcoma Communities link page. |
 |
You are not required to raise funds to participate
on the bike tour. If you
would like to, we encourage you to ask
some of your friends, family, and your company to sponsor your
participation on Team Sarcoma 2006 to help raise money for
sarcoma-related research. Some sponsors will donate a particular
amount for each mile (kilometer) you bike; others will donate a
fixed amount no matter how much you bike. To view and download a copy of our
sponsor and donation form,
You can view some of the research that we have sponsored on the
Initiative's
Funded Research webpage. |
 |
Let your local newspaper
and TV news, documentary, and public service programs know that you are
going to participate in Team Sarcoma 2006—an international event to
raise public awareness of sarcoma, to raise public awareness of the
lack of young adults in cancer-related clinical trials, and to raise
money for sarcoma-related research to help find a cure for this
disease. Share your story with them and share our “Sarcoma Facts”
with them. If we can help you with this effort, please let us know. |
