2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative Events
There are currently 50 teams in 12 different countries and 21 states within the United States that have planned events as part of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. We encourage you to participate in one or more of them that are close to you.
The official dates of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative are July 14-22, 2007. While the great majority of the scheduled events occur during this period, it is important to note that the dates of a few of the events are either before or after these dates due to the availability of the venue or because of other special circumstances.
As of the date of this posting (July 5, 2007, 4 PM), there are over 60 events listed (some teams are having several events on different days). Descriptions of the events and contact persons are given below. Please bookmark this page and return to it often and send or post a link to it. Encourage your family, friends, physicians, nurses to participate in these events. Together, our voices are louder.

Australia Team Sarcoma / Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Team Sarcoma / St. Vincent's Health Sarcoma Week in Melbourne: Team PeterMac and Team SVH are combining their efforts to jointly offer several events throughout the week of July 16-20 involving both hospitals, which are within walking distance of one another. To set the tone of the Sarcoma Week, Prof. Peter Choong will give a Grand Round Presentation, entitled "Sarcoma, The Intellectual Tumor", on July 9. This lecture will take place 12:30 -13:30 in the Peter Mac Lecture Theater. Sarcoma information will be available and on display in the lobby of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre throughout the week of July 16-20. On July 18, sarcoma patients, staff and supporters are invited to join in a fun evening of Team Ten Pin Bowling. Participants are also invited to sit for a while in the ambient atmosphere of the Central Quadrangle of St Vincent's, and enjoy a lunch time BBQ on July 18. On July 20, everyone is invited to wear a “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” bracelet and they are encouraged to pin Messages of Hope and Support to the notice board in the main foyer of the Peter MacCallum Hospital. Team Sarcoma / Canada Biking 500 KM for Sarcoma. Led by leiomyosarcoma patient Meg Thorburn, three cyclists biked from the south to the north end of the state of Vermont as part of the Team Sarcoma Initiative. Their route, in the Green Mountains, covered about 500 KM (approximately 310 miles) and extensive changes in elevation—most days they climbed well over 1200 Meters (over 4000 feet)! The ride took place during the 5-day period of June 11-15. It was an extraordinary accomplishment. Click here to see a photo of Meg and her two fellow cyclists. Team Sarcoma / Guang Dong This event will take place in Baiyun Park in the morning of July 14 and will include presentations about basic knowledge of sarcoma, free counseling, distribution of pamphlets introducing early diagnosis and treatment of sarcoma, patients telling stories of their experience, and a review of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. Team Sarcoma / TianJin Cancer Hospital Team Sarcoma TianJin will hold a week long event taking place in Tianjin Cancer Hospital during July 14-21. The event will involve sarcoma patients, their families, those who are supporting friends, the experts of sarcoma treatment, clinical doctors treating sarcoma. The aim of the event is boost the awareness of sarcoma and includes several parts: (1) Experiences of the sarcoma patients, including those who have finished the treatment, will receive the treatment, in treatment. It is helpful for the patients who are afraid of the side effect of the treatment. (2) A course of lectures of sarcoma given by the sarcoma experts. The event will make the awareness of the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis of the sarcoma. (3) The free diagnosis and counseling of the sarcoma in July 14-21 in Tianjin Cancer Hospital. (4) Distribution of pamphlets introducing early diagnosis and treatment of sarcoma and a review of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. Team Sarcoma / Vedersø Team Vedersø will hold its 2nd Annual 25 KM bike ride along the lovely west coast of Denmark beginning in the Village of Vedersø. It will take place on July 22. The ride will begin at 11 AM at Vedersø Klitvej 65 and proceed to the Vest Stadil Fjord Wild Life Refuge. A picnic will follow the ride. Team Sarcoma / les Globules Rose d'Anya - France Sarcome (GRAFS) The French sarcoma advocacy group, les Globules Rose d'Anya - France Sarcome, will hold a run in Changeac, a village near Vorey, France on July 14 (Bastille Day). The run will start at 9:30 AM. It's a "race against the clock". There will be a departure of one participant every 30 seconds up a hill that is 2 KM long. Team Sarcoma / Essen The West German Cancer Center at Essen and the German sarcoma advocacy group, Das Lebenshaus, are teaming up once again to form Team Sarcoma Essen. Das Lebenshaus, the first and only patient advocacy group for sarcoma patients in Germany. has established a broad network for GIST and is expanding its activities to patients with other sarcomas. The West German Cancer Center was the first Comprehensive Cancer Center in Germany and has had a strong, interdisciplinary focus on the treatment of sarcomas for many years. The Team Essen event take place on July 21, beginning at 2 PM, and consists of a 3 hour bike tour through the wonderful green surroundings of Essen and a picnic afterwards at the campus of the university hospital. The bike tour will be a non-competitive, fun ride, except a small, optional mountain stage, that will again identify the best junior, male, female and senior "racer". Team Essen expects to have many participants from the medical sarcoma team (nurses, doctors, social workers) and, hopefully, an increasing number of patients and their relatives and friends. Besides cold drinks and a barbecue, the get-together after the "race" will offer the chance for discussion and exchange of information. Team Sarcoma / Ireland Team Ireland is organizing a walk in Avondale, Rathdrum, County Wicklow, Ireland. The home of Charles Stewart Parnell (the uncrowned King of Ireland) is in Avondale. There will be a bit to eat afterward in a local in Arklow and there will be a swing band for entertainment. The walk will take place on July 22. For more information contact: Patricia Smith
Team Sarcoma / Tribute to Kaja Onishi Dr. Katsuhito Takahashi and Dr. Hisako Yamamura are organizing a special memorial on July 7-8 for paying tribute to the memory of Kaja Onishi who founded "Cure Sarcoma" and passed this past summer. The memorial will be held at SHIRAKAWA-GO in Gifu Prefecture, the famous World Heritage in Japan. A number of sarcoma patients and their family have been invited to this memorial, including Kyoko Yonezawa, a sarcoma patient and co-founder of “Cure Sarcoma” with Kaja. Dr. Junya Toguchida, Professor of Kyoto University who was the President of CTOS in 2006, will be giving a lecture. Team Sarcoma / Mexico Sarcoma Awareness Day. The Mexican Charitable Association for Children with Cancer, PAI (AMANC, Asociación Mexica de Ayuda para Niños con Cancer) is collaborating with the National Institute of Pediatrics (Instituto Nacional de Pediatria, Dr. Rocio Cardenas Cardos), the National Institute of Genomic Medicine (Instituto Nacional de Medicina Genomica, Dr. Gabbriela E Mercado Celis), and the We Will Never Give Up Foundation (Aqui Nadie se Rinde) to host the first ever Sarcoma Awareness Day in Mexico City as part of the Team Sarcoma Initiative. It will be held on July 19 from 11:00 AM to 3 PM at AMANC, Magisterio Nacional #100 Tlalpan Centro, CP 14000 Mexico City, Mexico. There will be a seminar about diagnosis and treatment of sarcoma and information about the national protocol for sarcomas. Some sarcoma parents and patients will talk about their personal experiences in dealing with sarcoma. The objectives of the Team Sarcoma Initiative and the formation of a National Mexican Sarcoma Advocacy Group for patients, caregivers and survivors will also be discussed. Team Sarcoma / Sweden Two Swedish bicyclists, Magnus Johansson and Håkan Liljeqvist, who are participating in two (incredible) biking events, the Vätternrundan (a 300 KM race taking place on June 15-16) and the Vänern Runt (a 550 KM race) are dedicating their participation in these races to the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative to help raise public awareness of sarcoma. Team Sarcoma / UK Team Sarcoma UK is a weekend event taking place in Torquay, South Devon, July 13-16, involving sarcoma patients and their families, those who are supporting friends and colleagues who are patients with a sarcoma and those treating sarcoma. The central event of the weekend will be a coastal walk (8.5 miles) from Brixham to Torquay on Sunday 15th. "The walk will be a team event, it is not a race, we will travel together. The surface is of a generally good standard but is uneven in places. Shoes/trainers/boots should be worn (not open footwear) and they should be comfortable for a long walk and have some grip. There are a few gradients and some steps, but none of them are severe, and at some points walkers can choose to walk on the beach rather than the path. Team Sarcoma / Stomp Out Sarcoma Stomp Out Sarcoma Beach Walk. The 1st Annual Stomp Out Sarcoma Beach Walk will take place on July 16 at North Beach in San Clemente, beginning at 6:30 PM. Team Sarcoma / Bradley - California Walk around the Lake. This event, held in memory of Bradley Rice, will begin at "MaMa Java's" in the Vista Del Lago Shopping Center on July 22 at 10 AM. There will be a 5K walk around Lake Mission Viejo on the same day that Team Sarcoma / Bradley will be having a 5K walk in Baltimore, Maryland (see below). Team Sarcoma / Sarcoma Alliance Run for Sarcoma. On July 14, Team SA will hold a run on Marin County's Mt. Tam in California. The run will be approximately 10 miles on hilly trails. A fair degree of fitness is necessary. For more information contact: Arthur Beckert
Team Sarcoma / Moffitt Sarcoma Program Sarcoma Sunset Stroll. Team Moffitt will hold its 2nd Annual Sarcoma Sunset Stroll at Clearwater Beach, Florida on July 20. It will be a 1 mile run/walk. Team Sarcoma / Let's Walk for a Great Cause Let's Walk for a Great Cause. This event is a walk around the beautiful Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, Florida. Team Sarcoma / Sarcoma Knows No Borders Sarcoma Knows No Borders Walk. This walk is being held in honor of Teri Marriage and all those who have been diagnosed with sarcoma. It is a walk at Birch State Park in Ft. Lauderdale and will take place on July 21. The meeting point will be Pavilion 2 at 9 AM. Team Sarcoma / Grind for Life Old School Skate Night. Team Grind for Life will hold an Old School Skate Night on July 18 from 7-9 PM at Cocoa Beach State Park, Florida. This is an event for everyone to watch and old school skateboarders to skate. It will be a fun skate session with one dollar raffles for many prizes. There is no cost to attend, but donations are welcome. Skatepark admission is $3, required for skaters only. Spectators are free. For more information contact: Mike Rogers
Team Sarcoma / Mid-America Mary-Elizabeth, a chondrosarcoma survivor who will be on the Team Sarcoma Bike Tour in Vermont (see below), has also organized an event to occur on July 22. It will take place at the TimberRidge Adventure Center, 12300 S Homestead Lane, Olathe, Kansas. There will be lots to do, picnic, catch & release fishing, hiking, and climbing wall. Team Sarcoma / Chris Gordon Bowl for Ewing's Sarcoma Bowl for Ewing's Sarcoma. Chris Gordon has organized a bowling tournament as part of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. Team Sarcoma / KeeperEdge for the Cure KeeperEdge is a soccer camp for goal keepers, The coaches and participants are dedicating their entire week of July 14-21 of training to the cause of sarcoma awareness and for a young soccer player, Lucas Jones, who is being treated for Ewing's sarcoma. Natasha Pitcock and her husband Nathan, one of the coaches at the camp, are organizing this event as part of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. This is their 2nd Annual event for sarcoma awareness. Team Sarcoma / Bradley Walk Around the Park. This event, held in memory of Bradley Rice, will take place at Baker Park in Frederick, Maryland on on July 22. This event will take place on the same day that Team Sarcoma / Bradley - California will be having a 5K walk in Mission Viejo, California (see above). Team Sarcoma / Dana Farber Cancer Institute Team DFCI is holding its 2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk on July 15 as part of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. It will take place at The Atlantic at 10 Seaport Drive in Quincy, Massachusetts starting at 3:30 PM. Following the run, you are invited to a poolside BBQ ("bring your bathing suits and swimies"). Team Sarcoma / Jennifer Hunter Yates Sarcoma Foundation & Massachusetts General Hospital On July 14, the Jennifer Hunter Yates Sarcoma Foundation (JHYSF) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) will jointly participates in the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. Walkers will gather in the Yawkey Courtyard at MGH at 10 AM and walk down to the Boston Commons, up Charles Street, and back to MGH. For more information contact: Susan Erickson
Team Sarcoma / iCureASPS (CureASPS International) Team iCureASPS is dedicating a 50-mile bike ride on July 21 to the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. The ride will be on the route between Wellesley to Wrentham MA and will start at 8:00 AM. Following the ride is a reception for riders and family members. Team Sarcoma / University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center Campus Stroll for Sarcoma. Join the Team Sarcoma Stroll around the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Saturday, July 7, starting at 10 AM. Dr. James Geiger, pediatric cancer surgeon from the University of Michigan will be on hand to share information about the latest sarcoma treatments. Educational materials and refreshments will also be available. The Stroll is being planned by the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, University Students Against Cancer and the Berry Patch Foundation. Team Sarcoma / o2 Miles Levin Fundraising Ride: Team o2 will hold a unique “day and night” ride on the evening of July 17. They are tentatively planning routes of 16 and 45 miles. The rides will start from Derby School parking in Birmingham, Michigan; Participants should arrive by 5:30 PM. Riding from the daylight into the darkness signifies that Team o2 acknowledges the struggle that Miles Levin and all sarcoma patients and their families endure with this illness, all day and all night, every day of their lives. Team o2 recognizes their steadfastness in confronting the illnesses they face and, in a modest way, supports them in their battle. Team Sarcoma / Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation Ride in Circles for Sarcoma. The Rein in Sarcoma 2007 on July 23 (6-9 PM) is the annual fundraising event for the Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation. As Rein in Sarcoma attendees "ride in circles" on Cafesjian's Carousel on the evening of July 23rd, they will be joining in the unique worldwide 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative to raise public awareness of sarcoma and raise funds to support research to find cures for sarcomas. Team Sarcoma / Peter Skelton Sarcoma Research Foundation The Peter Skelton Sarcoma Research Foundation (Team PSSRF) will hold its "1st Annual Walk, Run, or Cycle for Sarcoma" event on July 22 at the Riverwinds in West Deptford, New Jersey. Team Sarcoma / The Children's Hospital at Montefiore Children's Sarcoma: A Learning Event for Parents, Caregivers, Physicians, Friends and Families of Children Living with Sarcoma. This event will be held on July 22 in the 2nd Floor Conference Room at 3415 Bainbridge Avenue in the Bronx, New York. Team Sarcoma / New York University An Opera Recital for Sarcoma. Team NYU will hold an “Opera Highlights Recital” on July 20 as part of the Team Sarcoma Initiative. The conductor will be Maestro Vincent La Selva, the world famous conductor and artistic director of the New York Grand Opera. The event will take place at the Farkas Auditorium of the NYU Medical Center which is located at 550 First Avenue, between 30th and 33th Streets and will begin at 6 PM. There will be hors d'oeuvres after the performance in the adjacent Alumni Hall at the entrance to the Auditorium. This event is free to the public and there is no reserved seating. Team Sarcoma / Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Walk/Bike for Sarcoma. Team MSKCC will hold a Walk/Bike for Sarcoma event on July 14 (rain date July 21) on the North County Trailway in Westchester County as part of the Team Sarcoma Initiative. The distance will be determined by each participant. The event will begin at Railroad Park in Yorktown Heights, Town of Yorktown at 10 AM. Team Sarcoma / Brooklyn The Team Sarcoma / Brooklyn event is a bicycle ride along the Shore Parkway Greenway to Coney Island. It will take place on July 14 (rain date July 21). Team Sarcoma / Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation Hike for Sarcoma: Team DTRF will hike in Kakiat Park and hike to the summit where you can see Manhattan. Kakiat Park is in Suffern, New York. The hike will take place on July 16 beginning around 6 PM. For more information contact: Marlene Portnoy
Team Sarcoma / North Carolina 5K Run/Walk for a Cure. Team Duke will will hold its 2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk for a Cure on July 14 (rain date July 15). Team Sarcoma / LMSarcoma Direct Research (a.k.a. LMSdr) Mini-Triathlon to Kick Sarcoma's Butt. Team LMSdr will hold its 1st Annual Mini-Triathlon to Kick Sarcoma's Butt in Tulsa, Oklahoma on July 13, 14, and 15. The kick off event is on July 13, a “Bad Luck Day for Sarcoma”, is a mile swim at 7:00 AM followed by pancake breakfast at the Jenks High School Pool led by the Jenks Swim Club. The second event will be on July 14 and is a 10-mile bike ride along the Arkansas River Parks in Tulsa, concluding in a hamburger cookout (meet at Park 91st and Riverside at 11:00 AM). The third and concluding event is on July 15 and is a 3 mile run/walk around the LaFortune Park (meet at 6:00 PM in the South Parking Lot). There will be ice cream after the event. Team Sarcoma / Oregon - Hike for a Cure Hike for a Cure. Team Sarcoma Oregon is hosting a hike every day during July 16-21. Here is the current schedule: on July 16—hike to top of Spencer Butte, meet at 6 PM in the parking lot on Willamette; on July 17—walk a portion of Ruth Bascom Riverbank Trail (Greenway Bike Bridge to Owosso Bike Bridge loop, round-trip ~4.8 miles), meet at 6 PM at Maurie Jacobs Park; on July 18—walk a portion of Ruth Bascom Riverbank Trail (Greenway Bike Bridge to Ferry Street Bridge loop, round-trip ~3.2 miles), meet 6 PM at Maurie Jacobs Park; on July 19: walk a portion of Ruth Bascom Riverbank Trail (Ferry Street Bridge to Knickerbocker Bike Bridge look, round-trip ~4 miles), meet 6 PM at Alton Baker Park; on July 20—hike to top of Mt. Pisgah via Dery's South Summit Trail (#6), meet 6 PM PMm at East Trailhead; and on July 21—hike in the Oregon Cascades or Oregon Coast range, TBD, meet 10 AM at Park and Ride, W 17th Ave and Charnelton. Team Sarcoma / Fox Chase Cancer Center Walk for a Cure. The Team FCCC event will take place on July 17, from 9-10 AM and be followed by refreshments. It will be a 1.5 mile walk around the perimeter of the main Fox Chase Cancer Center campus. Refreshments will be served at the end of the walk. Team Sarcoma / Brian Morden Foundation Team BMF will be having several Team Sarcoma Initiative events. On July 14, there will be a "Bakery Ride" that will leave at 8 AM from Spokes/Skies and on July 18 there will a "President's Ride", leaving from the Pleasant Valley Shopping Center at 5:30 PM. Team Sarcoma / Hope Fund for Sarcoma Research Bastille Day Spinning Revolution. The Hope Fund for Sarcoma Research will hold its 1st Annual Spinning Revolution as part of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. This event will be held on July 14 at the Green Hills YMCA from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. It will be followed by a Bastille Day Celebration featuring café, croissants, awards, raffle prizes and live entertainment. Team Sarcoma / M.D. Anderson Cancer Center − Sarcoma Research Center Sarcoma Sunset Stroll. Team MDACC will hold a Sarcoma Sunset Stroll on Galveston Island. Team Sarcoma / Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation Trail Ride for Sarcoma. Team ASCF has scheduled its first-ever Team Sarcoma Trail Ride for Sunday, July 8 at the Bayou Trails near Aldine Westfield Stables in North Houston. The ride to be held at 10 AM will be in memory of Ben Ling and will take place in an effort to increase awareness of the disease that takes the lives of far too many young people like him. Sadly, Ben died of chondrosarcoma in March 2001, much too young having just turned 25. Participants of Houston's first-ever equestrian event of this type will include members of the Greater Houston Horse Council and the Houston Airport Rangers. Team Sarcoma / Huntsman Cancer Institute Team Utah will host an awareness walk followed by a BBQ as part of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. The event will take place on July 21 from 2 to 6 PM at Jordanelle State Park off Highway 40 near Heber. Sarcoma patients, survivors, families (including children), friends, and allied health care providers are invited to join the 2nd Annual Team Utah walk and be part of the celebration. Team Sarcoma / The "Core" Team This year the "core" Team sarcoma will be biking in the Lake Champlain area of Vermont during July 14-21. There are 52 participants on the team representing nine countries (China, Denmark, France, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and the United States) and 11 sub-types of sarcoma. They will be joined by a number of "day trippers" along the way, including sarcoma oncologists and nurses, patients, caregivers, and survivors. Team Sarcoma / Sarcoma Foundation of America Sarcoma Ride, Walk, Run. Team SFA will hold its 1st Annual Sarcoma Ride, Walk, Run event as part of the 2007 Team Sarcoma Initiative. Team Sarcoma / University of Washington Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Bike for a Cure. Team SCCA will undertake a 20-30 mike ride as part of the Team Sarcoma Initiative. It will begin at the SCCA in Seattle in July 14 at 10 AM. Please arrive 1/2 hour early for pictures/social gathering. After the ride, the team will get together for food & drink at a local PUB (The Ram in the University Village). Team Sarcoma / Central Wisconsin Sarcoma Support Walk, Run, Bike for Sarcoma. The Central Wisconsin Sarcoma Support group is holding a Walk, Run, Bike event at the Wildwood Park in Marshfield, Wisconsin on July 22, beginning with registration at 8 AM (the meeting point is in one of the shelters in the parking area by the Zoo). The walk will be a A 2K walk on the trails in Wildwood Park and Zoo. The run will be a 6K run, starting at Wildwood Park traveling north on Adams, then east on Adler Road then north on St Joseph Ave then east on Western St then south on Oak St then west on Doege Street (run pass American Cancer Society Hope) then south on St Joseph Ave, then south on Oak Ave then west on 14th Street then south on Adams Street back to the park. The bike ride will be a 16K ride, starting at the Park, going around the perimeter of the zoo, then a hilly route thru the outskirts of Marshfield, with the finish back at the park.
