Where
does the money go?
As a totally volunteer organization, we operate with as small
an overhead as possible. Sometimes is it as low as 2%, other times as high
as 4%, it all depends on the infrastructure and support costs of associated
with our initiatives. It is typically 2-3%. Therefore, on the average, 97-98% of
all the funds that the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative receives go directly
to sarcoma research or families.
We accept funds that are targeted toward specific sarcomas as
well as general funds targeted toward broadly based sarcoma research. We
support research at universities and cancer centers and contribute to other
sarcoma advocacy organizations, such as the Sarcoma Foundation of America
that support sarcoma research. We fund research attempting to find a cure
for sarcoma or developing more effective treatment regimens than those
currently available.
Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative
volunteers interact with public organizations, private
for-profit organizations, and private and public non-profit organizations to
raise awareness of sarcoma and the lack of young adults in clinical
trials. Because of the importance of detecting and diagnosing sarcomas as
early as possible, we are exploring research projects in this area; this
work may take the forms of tissue analysis, setting up tissue registries,
and work in understanding the biology of sarcomas. We will continue to fund
work at leading cancer institutes in translational science sarcoma research
involving the development of new approaches to fight sarcoma such as
vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, mTOR inhibitors, and the use of
nanotechnology in sarcoma research, treatments regimens, and diagnosis.
